PDLC Energy Efficiency: How Smart Film Cuts Power Use | Benefits of Switchable Glass

Updated: Mar 31

Smart films, especially switchable privacy films, can help with power consumption and energy efficiency in a few key ways:

🌞 1. Solar Heat Reduction

When in their opaque (off) state, smart films can block or diffuse a significant amount of infrared (IR) and UV rays, reducing the amount of heat that enters a room. This means:

Less need for air conditioning

Lower cooling costs, especially in sunny climates

❄️ 2. Insulation Effect

Even when transparent, many smart films have an insulating layer that helps reduce heat loss through windows during cooler months, helping maintain indoor temperature.

• Helps reduce heating costs in winter

💡 3. Light Control & Natural Illumination

Smart films let you control privacy without blocking natural light. This means:

• Less need for artificial lighting during the day

• Contributes to overall energy savings

🔌 4. Low Power Consumption

Smart films typically use very low voltage (often 48V), and they only consume power when in the ON (transparent) state — and even then, the consumption is minimal (around 3–5 watts per square meter).

So overall, smart films provide privacy, comfort, and energy savings — especially in homes and offices with large windows or glass facades.

Whimsical, cartoon-style illustration of planet Earth merging with a group of vibrant green trees. The trees’ trunks and branches blend into the outlines of continents, symbolizing a deep connection between nature and the planet. Puffy white clouds float around the globe, and the background features a warm sun and a clear sky. The ground is covered in grass and scattered leaves, giving the scene a lively and eco-friendly atmosphere.
